This is a green putty maquette mounted onto a metal rod that is screwed onto a wooden base. The maquette was constructed in the 1990's in preparation for the construction of a bronze statue on the UC campus, currently standing in front of the Law building. The putty is still soft to the touch and characteristic of Plastiline. The putty contains accumulated dirt as well as stray hairs. There was a potential handling hazard caused by two screws inserted from below the wood base that protruded 1/4 inch from the top of the wood. However, the most pressing condition issue was the oozing accretion of a dark brown material that were leeching from the base of the molded head and running down the metal rod onto the base. At the request of the librarian, the pointed protruding portions of the screws were removed with a jeweler's saw, the dark brown ooze was reduced mechanically, and the maquette was housed in a white, strong opaque plastic bin with a corrugated custom-made banker's box lid. |
